Chase Cantwell addresses formalism in his Cubes Series. Cantwell’s use of encaustic in this work allows for a luminous dreamy environment in which to highlight his cubed structures which are slightly lifted above the background enhancing their dimensionality. Cantwell has been infatuated with simple motifs from his years painting series of vertical stripes, walking lines, Curved line, and now he has ventured into dimensionality first thru his By Inference Series during covid to ending up with the geometrical abstracted Cubes Series.. The beauty of finding the right color to describe a side of a cube or the endless layers that create the spatial background. It took time for Cantwell to commit to the cube. They were difficult in execution. Requiring a steady hand with the blow torch and smooth application of the pigmented wax besides figuring out how the cubes would come together and when they do its magical. They float, tumble, fall, relate with each other. They are frozen in a moment of movement. Seeing is believing.
